The Beginning of the Project
McKNIGHT CENTENNIAL TRENCH
In 2014, Port Moody resident Guy Black came to the POMO Museum with the idea of constructing a modest replica of a WWI trench. This would be a tribute to honour the invaluable contribution of Canadian soldiers during WWI. The trench was constructed on the west side of the museum in June of 2014.
During the July long weekend of 2014, Guy and Carey Price began an re-enactment of what life was like in the trenches during WWI. This offered visitors a glimpse into the challenging life experienced by the soldiers. Eager guests witnessed firsthand the soldiers routines, watching them complete daily chores and sleeping exposed to the elements.
On July 1 of that weekend, an event honouring veterans was held at the museum to dedicate the trench to Augustus McKnight, a WWI Port Moody Engineer who made the ultimate sacrifice in service. Due to overwhelming interest and enthusiasm from visitors, the museum made a significant decision to construct a 70 foot trench at the back of the Museum.
Tri-Cities Community Television did a great job capturing the ceremony for the opening of the trench in 2014.
