SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

National War Memorial Replica comes to the Museum

In 2002, the British Columbia Veterans Commemorative Association, in collaboration with Veterans Affairs, initiated the creation of a travelling exhibit of a scaled replica of the National War Memorial. In 2017, the museum had the privilege of showcasing the exhibit for our community to enjoy.

Rudolf Koch was a renowned German type designer, calligrapher, and artist who played a significant role in shaping modern typography. He is best known for his pioneering work in type design and calligraphy in the early 20th century.

He crafted over 30 typefaces, many well known such as “Koch Antiqua” and “Kabel”. Koch’s work emphasized a revival of traditional calligraphy and lettering. He created iconic calligraphic pieces that continue to influence typology to this day.

This international exhibit gave the community a chance to look at Rudolf Koch's art that had never been displayed in North America. We had guest speakers, from two different countries ( Andrew Hoyem, David Spence and Dr. Dorthee Alder), school programming designed around it and students produced their own artwork which created an exhibit called How they see it.

The POMO museum was honoured to have Dr. Dorothee Ader come all the way from Offenbach Germany to give a special talk on Rudolf Koch, it was an appropriate end to the Koch Exhibit.

Gordon Shrum

Gordon Shrum fought at Vimy Ridge, was a celebrated scientist, and the first Chancellor of Simon Fraser University. The family of Gordon generously allowed us to have his uniform on display and the museum curated a special display to commemorate him.

British Columbia’s War: 1914-1918

This travelling exhibit was curated by the Royal BC Museum and featured British Columbian’s contributions to the First World War.

As they saw it

In 2018, Mia Lehtonen’s class from Burnaby North Secondary had a tour of our WWI trench. They then created a wonderful exhibit on what they saw and learned about Life in the trenches.

In World War I, hospitals were often chaotic and overcrowded. Nurses played a crucial role in providing care to wounded soldiers, often working long hours in difficult conditions.

This display offered a window into the conditions of hospitals during WWI and the unwavering commitment of the nurses.
